What is the Night of Decree?

Bismillaah, wal-hamdulillaah, was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa rasoolillaah.
Assalaamu 'alaykunna wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh,

In the Name of Allaah the Most Beneficient the Most Merciful.
Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. [Surah al-Qadr (97):1]
And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? [Surah al-Qadr (97):2]The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. [Surah al-Qadr (97):3]
The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. [Surah al-Qadr (97):4]Peace it is until the emergence of dawn. [Surah al-Qadr (97):5]

This is supported by what Imam Ahmad recorded from Ubadah bin As-Samit that the Messenger of Allah, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wasallam, said,

"The Night of Al-Qadr occurs during the last ten (nights). Whoever stands for them (in prayer) seeking their reward, then indeed Allah will forgive his previous sins and his latter sins. It is an odd night: the ninth, or the seventh, or the fifth, or the third or the last night (of Ramadan)."

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said " When Ramadan would come, the Messenger of Allah, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wasallam, would say,

Verily, the month of Ramadan has come to you all. It is a blessed month, which Allah has obligated you all to fast. During it the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are shackled. In it there is a night that is better than one thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good, then he has truly been deprived.''

[An-Nasa'i recorded this same Hadith]

Supplication during the Night of DecreeIt is recommended to supplicate often during all times, especially during the month of Ramadan, in the last ten nights, and during the odd nights of it even more so. It is recommended that one say the following supplication a lot:

"O Allah! Verily, You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.'' [*]

This is due to what Imam Ahmad recorded from `A'ishah, that she said,
"O Messenger of Allah! If I find the Night of Al-Qadr what should I say''

He replied, say:
"O Allah! Verily, You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.''
At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah have all recorded this Hadith.
At-Tirmidhi said, "This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.''

[*] For the supplication of the Night of Decree written in Arabic go to: http://www.quran4u.com/Tafsir%20Ibn%20Kathir/PDF/097%20Qadr.pdf
For those who cannot read Arabic, I've tried my best to make a transliteration. If I've made a mistake please forgive me and advise me, baarakAllaahu feekunna:    Allaahumma in-naka 'afuw-wu tuhib-bul'afwa fa'fu 'an-nii.
Please keep in mind that the letter 'ha' in tuhib-bul is the the 6th letter of the Arabic alphabet, not the 27th.

I highly recommend that you read the tafsir of Surah al-Qadar and Surah al-Muzzammil by Ibn Kathir since both chapters do speak about the Night Prayer during Ramadhaan. It's a must read inshaaAllaah!
Tafsir of Surah al-Qadr - http://www.quran4u.com/Tafsir%20Ibn%20Kathir/PDF/097%20Qadr.pdf
Tafsir of Surah al-Muzzammil - http://www.quran4u.com/Tafsir%20Ibn%20Kathir/PDF/073%20Muzzammil.pdf
For the tafsir of other chapters of the Qur'an - http://www.quran4u.com/Tafsir%20Ibn%20Kathir/

An advice if you're trying to memorize the Qur'an is to read the tafsir of the Surah that you are planning to memorize. It may make it easy [inshaaAllaah] to memorize a surah in which you understand its context, as to why it was revealed, the interpretation of the verses, so on and so forth.

May Allaah let us live long enough to fast the remainder of Ramadhaan, to benefit from it and the last ten nights of this blessed month. May Allaah also pardon us for our sins those in private and in public. Ameen.
InshaaAllaah, for those who would like to pray the last 10 nights of Ramadhaan, in hopes of finding the Night of Al-Qadr, you can either pray it in congregation at the mosque or at home.

And Allaah knows best.
