'If you are in a state of janaabah, purify yourself.' [Soorah al-Maa'idah:6]
This ayah shows that Allah orders the junub (one in a state of sexual impurity) to purify himself and that this purification is performed by the ghusl.
Ghusl is obliogated for the following reasons:
1) When many (semen) comes out with desire, wheter for male or female, and whether they're awake or sleeping.
2) Meeting of the two circumcised parts (of the male & female) even if no liquid is released.
3) Menstruation and post-natal bleeding
4) Death
5) When an unbeliever becomes Muslim
Description of the Ghusl of the Prophet (Sallalahu alaihi wassalam)
The Ghusl is divided into two parts:
1) The Lesser Ghusl- Is washing the dirt or impurity off one's body, to make an intention and to wash the whole body.
2) The Complete Ghusl - Is what the related textually from the Prophet and it contains ten matters:
a) The intention.
b) Saying bismillah
c) Washing the hands three times.
d) Washing the impurities (off the private parts).
e) Wudhu.
f) Pouring water over the head three times down to the roots of the hairs.
g) It is recommended to rub the roots of the hair (with wet fingers) on the head and the beard before pouring water over it.
h) Pouring water over all the body.
i) Starting with right side and rubbing the body with hand.
j) Leave the area of the ghusl and wash the feet.
The ghusl of the woman is the same as the ghusl of the man, except that the women does not have to untie her hair as long as the water reaches the roots of her hair due to the hadeeth of Umm Salamah.
It is recommended for the woman when she has ghusl after mentration and post natal bleeding that she take a piece of cotton or something similar
and dip it into some musk or perfume and then put the perfume upon the area of the blood to perfume it and to cover the smell of the blood.
