So lose not heart or fall into despair, for you must gain mastery if you are true in faith. [Qur’an, 3:139]
When we think of leaders from the Sahaba, we always consider Abu Bakr
(R.A.). He was a leader well before he was proclaimed the first Caliph,
and amongst the many instances in which his leadership shone, the
following 2 events are well worth mentioning:
[1] The Loss Of A Mighty Prophet:
Once news spread that the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) had passed away, the
grief that overcame the Muslims caused confusion and disturbance. From
that grief, fear and chaos arose Abu Bakr (R.A.), like a beacon to calm
and contain a people that needed a leader. In his opening address he
announced, “Obey me as long as I obey Allah and His Messenger. If I
disobey them I have no right to be obeyed”, which speaks volumes about
his sincerity and sense of responsibility towards the Ummah.
