Silence is Golden

Once Abu Bakr (may Allah sbt be pleased with him), the beloved companion of the Prophet Muhammed (peace & blessings of allah be upon him) was sitting in the company of Rasulallah. When all of sudden a man entered the room and began to unleash intense verbal abuse upon Abu Bakr, he would say one thing after another. And Abu Bakr remained patient and calm while this man continued to say harsh things to Abu Bakr. In fact, when Abu Bakr turned he saw the Prophet sitting and smiling. Appreciating the forbearance and patience of Abu Bakr (RA), the prophet kept smiling. However when the man continued to lash out on Abu Bakr after a long period of time, Abu Bakr (RA) finally replied to some of the things he said. All of a sudden Rasulullah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became angry, got up and left. Abu Bakr (RA) went after him and said: O Rasulullah! He was abusing me in your presence, but when I replied to some of what he said, you became angry and left.

He replied:

There was an angel with you, replying to him on your behalf but when you replied to him, the angel went away and Shaitan took its place, and I will not sit in the company of Shaitan.

(Musnad Ahmed)
